Our Pass Rate Statistics

We surveyed the 288 SGT candidates who attended the 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between August and September 2024. We had 238 responses (a response rate to our results survey of 82.6%). Of those 238, 194 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 81.5%. Of the 194 passes, 44 were in the ‘exceptional’ category (22.6% of our candidates were ‘exceptional’ compared to the National ‘exceptional’ rate of 2.3%).

We surveyed the 155 officers who attended our crammer courses between January and May 2024 who took the Inspectors’ exam in November 2023. We had 123 responses (a response rate of 79.3%). Of those 123 candidates, 91 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 73.9%.

We surveyed the 354 SGT candidates who attended the 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between January and March 2024. We had 322 responses (a record high response rate to our results survey of 91%). Of those 322, 262 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 81.3%.

Of the 262 passes, 55 were in the ‘exceptional’ category (17% of our candidates were ‘exceptional’ compared to the National ‘exceptional’ rate of 6.1%).

We surveyed the 147 officers who attended our crammer courses in September and October 2023 who took the Inspectors’ exam in November 2023. We had 128 responses (a response rate of 87%). Of those 128 candidates, 101 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 78.9%.

We surveyed the 301 SGT candidates who attended the four 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations in September 2023. We had 243 responses (a high response rate of 81%). Of those 243, 207 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 85.1% (this includes 33/41 passes (80% pass rate) we were notified about via Staffordshire Police Learning & Development Dept (who sent Staffordshire candidates on our Staffordshire crammer course).

We surveyed the 198 officers who attended the crammer courses we ran for the May 2023 Inspectors’ exam. We had 166 responses (a response rate of 83.8%). Of those 166 candidates, 129 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 77.7%.

We surveyed the 637 SGT candidates who attended the seven 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between February and March 2023. We had 463 responses (a high response rate of 73%). Of those 463, 408 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 88.1%.

We surveyed the 412 officers who attended the six crammer courses we ran for the 2022 Inspectors’ exam. We had 354 responses (a response rate of 85.9%). Of those 354,276 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 77.9%.

We surveyed the 653 officers who attended the eight 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between January and March 2022. We had 433 responses (a high response rate of 66%). Of those 433, 373 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 86.1%

We surveyed the 421 officers who attended our crammer courses. We had 352 responses (a response rate of 83.6%). Of those 352,259 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 73.5%.

We surveyed the 422 officers (a reduced number of candidates attending our courses dues to Covid restrictions) who attended the nine 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between January and March 2021. We had 344 responses (a very high response rate of 82%). Of those 344, 295 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 86% (the second highest pass rate in the history of our SGT courses).

We surveyed the 302 officers who attended our crammer courses. We had 246 responses (a response rate of 81%). Of those 246, 233 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 95%.

We surveyed the 1050 officers who attended the eleven 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between January and March 2020. We had 822 responses (a very high response rate of 78%). Of those 822, 749 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 91% (the highest pass rate in the history of our SGT courses).

We surveyed the 692 officers who attended our crammer courses. We had 551 responses (a high response rate of 80%). Of those 551, 439 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 80%. Those passes included the officers who were placed 2nd, 5th, 8th and 10th nationally along with officers who were placed top in their force in GMP, Thames Valley Police, Kent, Cumbria, Hertfordshire and Nottinghamshire and many more.

We surveyed the 935 officers who attended the ten 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between January and March 2019. We had 655 responses (a high response rate of 70%). Of those 655, 550 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 84% (the highest pass rate in the history of our SGT and INSP courses). This included the candidates placed 2nd, 3rd and 4th nationally. The national pass rate was only 41%.

We surveyed the 552 officers who attended our crammer courses. We had 403 responses (a high response rate of 72%). Of those 403, 292 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 72%. Those passes included the officers who were placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 9th nationally along with officers who were placed top in their force in GMP, Merseyside, West Midlands, West Yorkshire, Thames Valley Police, South Yorkshire, Essex, Devon & Cornwall, Lincs and many more.

We surveyed the 760 officers who attended the ten 3-day crammer courses we ran at various locations between January and March 2018. We had 465 responses (a high response rate of 61%). Of those 465, 354 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 76%. This included the candidates placed 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th nationally. The national pass rate was a mere 35%.

We surveyed the 426 officers who attended our crammer courses. We had 309 responses (a very high response rate of 73%). Of those 309, 235 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 76%. This included Matthew Hogg who scored 92% (1st in the country). Those passes included the officers who were placed 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 8th nationally along with officers who were placed top in their force in Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Avon & Somerset, Gloucestershire, Cleveland, Merseyside, Durham, Humberside, Warwickshire and West Mercia.

In 2017 we took a new approach to establishing our success rate and surveyed the 600 officers who attended our crammer courses. We had 420 responses (an excellent response rate of 70%). Of those 420, 335 reported that they passed the exam – a pass rate of 79%. This included the two officers who scored 89% (joint 1st in the country). That is over twice the national pass rate which was a poor 39%.

As usual we canvassed a number of force examinations officers but due to several changes in staff we only had two responses. This did not provide enough data to extrapolate any meaningful pass/fail data. The national pass rate in this exam was 39%.

This pass rate is generated from the figures supplied by the following force examinations officers: GMP, Durham, Derbyshire, Kent, Bedfordshire, British Transport Police, Essex, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, Norfolk, Sussex, Derbyshire.

The course pass rate comes from looking at the results of 144 officers who attended our courses from British Transport Police, Sussex, Kent, Essex, Bedfordshire, Derbyshire, GMP, Durham, Cambridgeshire, Merseyside, Nottinghamshire, Suffolk, Gwent and West Yorkshire. In total, 119 officers were successful; a pass rate of 83%. The national pass rate was 52% – 31% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

In 2015 we contacted more force examinations officers than ever before to obtain our pass rate statistic. We obtained results from Cumbria, GMP, Durham, Derbyshire, Kent, Bedfordshire, British Transport Police, Lancashire, Essex, North Wales, Devon and Cornwall, Hertfordshire, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Sussex, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire. Of the 373 officers from these forces who attended our courses, 305 passed the examination. That is DOUBLE the national pass rate of 41%.

The course pass rate comes from looking at the results of 136 officers who attended our courses in Durham, Sussex, Birmingham, Manchester, Essex and London. In total, 98 officers were successful; a pass rate of 72%. The national pass rate was 43% – 29% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from canvassing officers who attended our courses in Chester, Bedfordshire, Essex, Kent, Sussex and Devon & Cornwall (and also British Transport Police Candidates). Of the 240 responses, 187 passed the examination, a pass rate of 78%. The national pass rate was 38% (40% lower than the Checkmate pass rate).

The course pass rate comes from looking at the results of 107 officers who attended our courses in Sussex, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Birmingham, and Manchester and includes those sent to use by British Transport Police (7/13 passed). In total, 67 officers were successful; a pass rate of 63%. The national pass rate was 36% – 27% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 289 officers who attended our courses from Bedfordshire, Essex, Kent, British Transport Police, West Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire and Sussex. Of the 289 candidates, 223 were successful in the examination; a pass rate of 77.1%. The national pass rate was 42.4% (34.7% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

The course pass rate comes from looking at the results of 112 officers who attended our courses in London, Essex, Manchester and Birmingham including those sent to use by British Transport Police (14/16 passed). In total, 89 officers were successful; a pass rate of 79%. The national pass rate was 57% – 22% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 237 officers who attended our courses from Bedfordshire, Essex, Devon & Cornwall, Leicestershire, Kent, British Transport Police, West Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire and Sussex. Of the 237 candidates, 181 were successful in the examination; a pass rate of 76.3%. The three best performing forces in the country were Avon & Somerset, Merseyside and Bedfordshire who had a combined pass rate of 57.2%, 19.1% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

The course pass rate comes from looking at the results of 126 officers who attended our courses in Devon & Cornwall, Greater Manchester, Bedfordshire, Essex, Leicestershire and West Yorkshire as well as officers atteending from British Transport Police. In total, 87 officers were successful; a pass rate of 69%. The national pass rate was 41% – 27% lowere than the Checkmate pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 254 officers who attended our courses from Bedfordshire, West Mercia, Essex, Devon & Cornwall, Leicestershire, Kent, Nofolk, Cleveland, Leicestershire, British Transport Police and Sussex. Of the 254 candidates, 197 were successful in the examination; a pass rate of 77.5%. The three best performing forces were Thames Valley, Bedfordshire and Merseyside with a combined pass rate of 60%, 16.5% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 103 officers who attended our courses from Bedfordshire, West Mercia, Essex, Devon & Cornwall, Leicestershire, Kent and Sussex. Of the 103 candidates, 68 were successful in the examination; a pass rate of 66%. The two best performing forces were Merseyside and Thames Valley with a combined pass rate of 55%, 11% lower than the Checkmate pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 248 of the officers who attended our Sergeants’ crammer courses in Devon & Cornwall (40/54), Bedfordshire (31/36), Sussex (45/52), Leicestershire (11/21), Kent (33/39), Essex (14/17) and West Mercia (21/29). A combined total of 195/248 Checkmate Training Ltd candidates were successful (78.6%). The top three performing forces in the country were Bedfordshire (46/65), Merseyside (103/162) and Cumbria (44/73). A combined total of 193/300 from these top forces gives a pass rate of 64.3%, 14% lower than Checkmate Training’s pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 166 of the officers who attended our Inspectors’ crammer courses in Devon & Cornwall, Kent, Bedfordshire, Essex, West Mercia, South Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Sussex. Of the 166 candidates, 113 were successful in the examination. The best performing forces in the country were Dyfed Powys (69% pass rate but only 13 officers actually sat the exam), Lancashire (61% pass rate) followed by Thames Valley Police (60% pass rate). These forces managed a combined 103 passes from 172 candidates (a combined pass rate of 59%, 9% lower than Checkmate Training’s pass rate).

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 257 of the officers who attended our Sergeants’ crammer courses in Devon & Cornwall (40/49), Bedfordshire (19/25), South Yorkshire (22/61), Leicestershire (47/64), Merseyside (26/29), Sussex (14/16) and Essex (16/23). A combined total of 184/257 Checkmate Training Ltd candidates were successful (69%). The top three performing forces in the country were the Isle of Man Police (7/11), Merseyside (116/202) and Dyfed-Powys (26/47). A combined total of 149/260 from these top forces gives a pass rate of 57% – 12% lower than Checkmate Trainings’ pass rate.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 132 of the officers who attended our Inspectors’ crammer courses in Sussex, Devon & Cornwall, Kent and Bedfordshire. Of the 132 candidates, 84 were successful in the examination. The best performing forces in the country were Port of Tilbury (100% pass rate but only 1 candidate), SOCA (66% pass rate but only 3 candidates) followed by Cumbria, Cleveland, Thames Valley Police and Hertfordshire. These forces managed a combined 84 passes from 137 candidates (a combined pass rate of 61%).

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 144 of the officers who attended our Sergeants’ crammer courses in Devon & Cornwall and Sussex. Of the 144 candidates, 75 were successful in the examination. The best performing forces in this examination were Port of Tilbury (100% pass rate but only 2 candidates) and Dyfed-Powys (49% pass rate but only 51 candidates).

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 118 of the officers who attended our Inspectors’ crammer courses in Devon & Cornwall, Sussex and Bedfordshire. Of the 118 candidates, 78 were successful in the examination. The best performing forces in this examination were Gwent and SOCA; both scoring a 60% pass rate. Gwent only had 30 officers taking the examination; SOCA only had 5.

This course pass rate comes from looking at all 254 of the officers who attended our Sergeants’ crammer courses in Devon & Cornwall, Sussex, Hertfordshire and Nottinghamshire. Of the 254 candidates, 163 were successful in the examination. To put this in perspective, the best force performance in 2007 was by Thames Valley (45.9%, 107/233). If Thames Valley had a 64% pass rate they would have had 149 passes instead of 107.
